Arrival to Kuusamo Airport
We will meet you upon your arrival to Kuusamo airport in northern Finland, in order to take you to our cosy winter home for the next week! We will stay at a small, eco friendly resort, right in the middle of the wilderness; you can snowshoe right from your room!
After check-in, we will have a briefing to explain more about the weeks’ adventures, and we will be receiving our winter equipment which will be ours for the rest of the week.
We will end the day with a cosy dinner by the fire; Ready for our week ahead!
Snowshoeing day
After breakfast, we will get a snowshoe introduction from our guide, and then head off into the national park which is full of snow packed routes and trees, rivers, waterfalls and many picture perfect sceneries.
With good luck, we will see the White Dipper diving into open water in search of food or Siberian Jays flying in the trees. We will be back just in time for a yummy warming lunch at the cottage. You will have a free afternoon to enjoy the surroundings and make memories with your fellow adventurers. Don’t forget you can always use the sauna and hot tub (and roll in the snow)!
Introduction to Cross-country skiing
Let’s explore a Scandinavian-born sport – cross-country skiing! The skiing track starts just from our doorstep.
We know that you might not be familiar with how to Cross-country ski, so don’t worry, your guide will be teaching you the basic techniques, so you will be able to enjoy a few laps in the Juuma lake area.
Whatever your level of expertise in this sport, a lot of fun is guaranteed, surrounded by breathtaking snowy landscapes.
After lunch, you are free to perfect your skiing skills, do some more snowshoeing, use the traditional Finnish sauna and outdoor hot tub- or just read a book by the fire!
Husky ride & Northern Lights hunt
Today we will take you on an unforgettable 10 km husky sled ride through the hundred-year-old forests of Riisitunturi National Park. We will be briefed on how to control the husky sled (each sled takes 2 people, one driver, one passenger- we change half way) and then we head into the untouched wilderness.
We will be served a warm lunch in a tent by a roaring fire, before returning to our cabins.
The day will not end here!
Lapland is a place of magic, and after dinner we will effort to witness one of the most magical natural phenomenons –the aurora, or northern lights! Fitted with headlamps and snowshoes, we will walk through the starry night, with the hope to witness the magical dance of the Aurora, or observe a sky full of stars.
However, remember to wish upon many stars, as catching the aurora is in the hands of mother nature!
Free day to choose from many activities
On this day you can choose to ski, snowboard, visit a reindeer farm, go exploring on a snowmobile, race with a karting car on ice, or even ice skate on a frozen lake.
You will be dropped off and picked up from the nearby ski resort of Ruka.
The lunch at this day will be at your own expense, since depending on the activity you will choose, different options are available!
You can ofcourse also stay at the cabins, go to the sauna or the hot tub, or use your snowshoes or skis to go for a self-guided adventure!
Igloo building and fire making
Today you will be taught the ancient art of quinzhee (aka Igloo) building. Using shovels and spades and working in groups, we will create a mound of snow, which is later hollowed out to make sleeping quarters. During this day, we will also be taught certain wilderness skills, like building a fire in the snow.
When your quinzhee is ready, you will have the opportunity to spend the night in it (sleeping bags will be provided), however, don’t be scared, your cosy cabin is just a few hundred meters away, and you can easily get back to your room whenever you want during the night!
Snowshoeing in Riisitunturi National Park
Today we snowshoe through the stunning Riisitunturi National Park, another trip highlight!
Famous for its snow-crowned “monster trees” and stunning landscapes, we will hike up to enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding wilderness and lake Kitkajärvi, Europe’s largest spring water lake.
Along the way you will also learn about the arctic nature, way of life, and enjoy a picnic lunch by the fire.
This is sadly also the last day of our magical winter wonderland adventure, so as a last farewell, we will enjoy a special four-course farewell dinner at our camp’s restaurant.
Until next time!
It is time to leave this beautiful winter wonderland- our hearts break a little every time we have to leave this peaceful white haven behind!

Frequently asked questions
What will the weather be like during this adventure?
Lapland in January is cold, snowy, and magical. Basically a winter wonderland! Here’s what you can expect: Average daytime temperatures will be between 0°C and -15°C and temperatures could drop to -25°C at night. Daylight is expected until around 2pm. January is one of the best months to see the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) thanks to long dark nights and clear skies.
What about the Visa needed?
Visa requirements depend on your nationality and the length of your stay:
- Visa-Free Entry: Travelers from the EU, Schengen Area, UK, USA, Canada, Australia, UAE, and other eligible countries can enter Italy visa-free for up to 90 days within a 180-day period for tourism or business.
- Schengen Visa: If your country requires a visa, you must apply for a Schengen Tourist Visa, which allows stays of up to 90 days in Italy and other Schengen countries.
Important: Every traveler is responsible for obtaining the correct visa before the trip. The Sports Guru is not responsible for any entry issues on the day of travel.
What kind of clothes should I pack for a trip to Lapland?
- Shell jacket and trousers (windproof & waterproof)
- Two fleece layers (one thin, one thick) for both top and bottom
- Warm hat and mittens
- Gloves
- Insulated winter boots
- Thermos flask
- Headtorch
All you need to bring are your base layers and personal essentials. Don’t worry, once you book with us you will receive a detailed packing checklist so you don’t miss anything. With the right layers and our provided gear, you’ll be perfectly prepared to enjoy the magic of Lapland—even at -25°C!
Do I need any previous experience in the winter activities offered?
No experience is necessary—this trip is designed for everyone! Whether you’re a complete beginner or someone who’s never seen snow before, you’re more than welcome. We’ll have professional guides leading each activity, teaching you the basic techniques and making sure you feel safe, confident, and have a great time. Already experienced in winter sports? Amazing! Many of our activities can be adapted to a higher intensity level, so you’ll still be challenged and have the chance to explore further or go faster. Whether you’re trying something for the first time or sharpening your skills, there’s something for everyone on this trip.
Is it guaranteed that we’ll see the Northern Lights on this adventure?
As much as we wish we could say yes, seeing the Northern Lights can never be guaranteed, they’re a natural phenomenon and depend on a mix of solar activity and weather conditions. That said, January is one of the best times of the year to see them in Lapland! The long, dark nights and usually clear skies create ideal conditions. We’ll also be staying in areas with minimal light pollution, which increases our chances. We’ll keep a close eye on aurora forecasts and, when the lights are active, we’ll make sure you’re ready to head out and catch the show. So while we can’t promise the auroras, we can promise we’ll do everything we can to help you see them!
